Yesterday I took part (along with my friend Kristen and about 40 other people) in the Seattle Beacon Hill segment of Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk. The sun was hot, the light was bright, the shadows harsh. But, it was still a lot of fun, especially since I hadn’t ever even driven through the area.
Here is a link to my Flickr album of some of my favorites.

Last friday I decided to take a trip to Woodland Park Zoo (www.zoo.org). The day started out gray and overcast with a little drizzle thrown in for good measure-probably one of the best times to go to the zoo since less than stellar weather keeps the crowds away. Not to mention that many of the animals are more active first thing in the morning, which is when I went.
As photographers in a zoo environment we have one major thing going for us and several against. In the “for” column we have access to a wide range of subjects. In the “against” column we have wire mesh,...

Right outside my rec-room window I have two pretty good sized lavender bushes. While weeding today I noticed that the bees are out in full force, so I quit weeding and grabbed my camera. I had my camera on a tripod for a while, but bees don’t tend to pose so after a bit I slapped the flash on the top and went from there.

Yesterday evening while visiting friends in the Crown Hill neighborhood of Seattle, WA (Ballard for the old-timers) I spent a little time in their back garden with my camera and flash. For the following I used my Pentax K10D, the 18-55 kit lens and a Pentax AF540-FGZ flash. All the shots were taken with the flash triggered wirelessly.
This first shot, was taken in deep shade, and I didn’t really have time to set up a tripod (it was a friend’s birthday yesterday and I only had a few minutes until cake time), so I wasn’t able to do any long exposure work. This whole series is...

I decided to give Mpix a try for printing, and I just got the “your order has shipped” email. I plan on opening an Etsy store in the very near future and I’ll need to use someone to print for me since I can only go as wide as 8.5″ on my printer.
I decided for my test I would get four 8″ x 10″s done, two black and white and two color. I cropped out the interesting bits from a black and white conversion of ”Though the Fog”, “A Hooded Merganser”, “Cherry Blossoms in the Breeze” and “Tiny Flowers” so that if I...

Today it’s macro on a budget. And not the national deficit level budget that some lenses seem to run, a reasonable budget.
Very respectable results for close up work can be had with in expensive equipment. Many of the pictures in my galleries were taken with just such equipment. Auto-focus Macro lenses are great, but for close up work approaching 1:1 (or even exceeding it) auto-focus isn’t necessarily a lot of help. In fact, quite often the amount of available light for a macro shot makes auto-focusing that much more difficult. In the case of macro, manual focus lenses are quite...

I’m what I call a non-denominational shooter. I enjoy taking photographs but the brand of equipment I use isn’t really that important to me.
Currently, I use a Pentax D-SLR, a Canon Point & Shoot and a Blackberry smartphone as my primary photographic tools. And a tool is really all any camera is, when it comes right down to it. And as the tool requirements change so will the tools.
It seems now my tool requirements are changing. I’m really getting into (an enjoying) off camera flash work and my Pentax flash is a little limiting in that respect. It won’t do...
